Handling Gas Line Leaks
Building owners and occupants should always take gas leaks seriously. Gas related deaths and injuries occur every year and most could have been prevented. It is important to have the emergency number of the local gas distribution service readily available in case of a gas leak situation.
What Causes a Gas Leak?
A gas leak can be the result of a badly fitted, poorly maintained or faulty appliance. Gas can escape around the seal or the gas hose that leads into the appliance. It is essential such appliances be installed and maintained by a licensed and insured professional. If necessary, ask the professional to present proof of registration.
It is important to use caution of used or old appliances, especially if moving into a new property or renting a home or apartment.
Detecting a Gas Leak
The first sign of a gas leak is the smell of gas in the building. Gas distribution companies add smell to an otherwise odor free product to enable the detection process quickly. In addition to smell, there are other symptoms occupants may suffer if there is a leak. If the occupant feels dizzy, ill nauseous or light headed, it is essential to evacuate the building immediately. If symptoms dissipate after getting some fresh air for a few minutes, chances are the occupant has suffered the effects of exposure to gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning.
There are also a few signs a building owner or occupant can look for that can indicate a gas leak or a gas leak coming soon even if the smell of gas is not detected and include:

2.) Look for a pilot light that does not stay lit.
3.) Brown or black scorch marks or the presence of soot around the appliance.
4.) Excessive condensation of the windows or a musty smell in the air.
If the smell of gas or any of the other signs are detected, it is critical to take action immediately.
What Do I Do If I Suspect a Gas Problem?
The first thing to do is to turn the gas supply off at the gas meter or the emergency shut off valve that is located between the appliance and the meter. It is important to be familiar with the location of emergency vales and the location of the gas meter. The next step is to open the windows and air out the building and then get outside and into the fresh air.
Do not use any electrical switches, including an electronic doorbell and light switches until the building has been completely refreshed as the sparks could create an explosion. Do not smoke, light candles or matches as they could ignite a gas leak. Call the local gas emergency number once the imminent danger has been addressed. Be sure someone is present to allow the emergency technician to gain access to the property. If a fire breaks out, the first order of business is to call the fire service.
A gas leak that is not addressed immediately could result in an explosion or fire. That translates to loss of property and possible injury or loss of life to anyone in the vicinity of the gas leak.
