How often should I have my water heater checked out?

Signs Your Water Heater Is In Need Of Repairs

Sooner or later the water heater will need repairs or replacing. There are some additional signs to observe to indicate that you may need a new water heater.

Water heaters usually have a tiny flame (also known as a pilot light). This flame makes it possible for the unit to function. You will not have any hot water if the pilot is not lit. You can light the pilot light yourself if you know exactly how to do it. If you are not sure how to light it, always call a professional.

If you notice that it takes a very long time for the water to become hot, it could also mean that your water heater needs repairing. Sometimes this issue can be caused by various minerals in your water that leave deposits in the tank, reducing the effectiveness of the heater. This could also indicate that the water heater no longer has good ventilation.

Sometimes water heater issues can be caused by the thermostat being set at too low of a level. Depending on your brand, you want to determine what the recommended setting should be. Usually they are set at about 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Many times this issue can be repaired but of course it depends on issues like how old the unit is.

In the event that you notice the hot water becomes cooler while turned on, this also may be a signal that it needs repairing. You may notice this decrease in water temperature while you are washing dishes or using a washing machine. Also keep in mind that as the size of your household increases, it requires more work from the hot water heater. If you notice that the water temperature fluctuates it could mean that the water usage cannot accommodate with the present water heater.
