The Hidden Cause of Poor Water Pressure in the Shower

What Is Causing Low Water Pressure in the Shower?

Low water pressure can make showering uncomfortable and make washing off soap and shampoo harder. But there are many issues that could be causing that low water pressure. Here is some information to help homeowners troubleshoot poor water pressure in the shower and narrow down what could be causing it.

Does Low Water Pressure Only Happen When Using Hot Water?

If low water pressure occurs in multiple fixtures like showerheads and taps but only when the hot water is running, the cause of the water pressure issues could be the water heater. Hot water pressure can be affected when there is an accumulation of sediment inside the water heater or another problem with it.

Routine water heater maintenance can help prevent this from occurring since it includes flushing the tank to remove sediment. Without it, the sediment can build up and affect the water heating, system efficiency, and water pressure, and even lead to corrosion, so maintenance is essential.

Is Hot and Cold Water Affected in Multiple Fixtures?

If multiple plumbing fixtures are suffering from poor water pressure when using both hot and cold water, it could be a clog or leak causing it. Leaks direct water away from a plumbing fixture, so without the full volume of water exiting the correct faucet or fixture, this leads to low water pressure.

Clogs and blockages can also cause low water pressure. A clog narrows the pipe and prevents the full volume of water from reaching the desired faucets and fixtures. Clogs and leaks will need to be removed and fixed by a professional plumber, as they have the right equipment to locate and fix them.

Is the Low Water Pressure Only Occurring With the Showerhead?

Sometimes, water pressure issues can also be solved by cleaning or replacing the showerhead, as showerheads can become clogged with mineral buildup. This is likely the case if the poor water pressure occurs only with that one showerhead, affecting both the hot and cold water coming out of it.

If this is the case, plumbers can replace the showerhead, or homeowners can try to clean and unclog them by soaking it in a vinegar solution and using an old toothbrush or scrubber sponge to remove the buildup from the holes in the nozzle of the showerhead. No matter the cause of poor water pressure, plumbers can help determine what's causing it and recommend solutions.
