Why Almost Every Household Needs a Water Softener

Defining Hard Water

“Hard water” is a term used to describe water with a high level of dissolved minerals. These minerals usually come from exposure to limestone, composed primarily of magnesium and calcium with certain metals like copper and iron. While none of these substances are dangerous, they can cause issues for homeowners and their plumbing.

The Basic Chemistry of the Water Softener

softenerWater softeners can remove dissolved minerals from water due to positively and negatively charged ions. The calcium and magnesium in the water are positively charged (cations), so water softeners use resin beads or crystals with a negative charge (anions). The two ions are drawn together like magnets, and the minerals precipitate out of the water. This is called ion exchange.

Once the resin beads have collected too many dissolved minerals, the water softener system will need to be refreshed. This occurs when salt is added that has a stronger positive charge than the minerals, so the beads draw in the salt instead. The minerals are then flushed out of the system. Though some salt in the water comes into a home’s pipes, it does not affect the taste of the water. Other than that, the water should be mineral-free.

What Does Hard Water Do?

skinAs far as just appearance, a person cannot typically tell by sight if water is considered hard or soft. Sometimes taste is a factor, but even that is not a reliable test. Fortunately, many signs indicate whether or not a home has hard water. Here are the most easily identifiable signs of hard water:

  • Spotty glasses and dishes after washing them
  • Stiff, scratchy laundry
  • Dry skin and a film left on hands after washing
  • Limp and dry hair
  • Low water pressure due to scale build-up in pipes
  • Soap scum and deposits on bathroom fixtures like faucets and showerheads

Why Every Homeowner Should Consider a Whole Home Water Softener

Adding a new appliance to a home can feel like a large expense, and homeowners often have many questions. However, water softener installation is usually less expensive and intrusive than a person might expect. Consulting with a local professional is always a good idea for any concerns.  Whole-home water softeners have a wide range of benefits. Here are a few:

  • Preserves Appliances: The water heater, dishwasher, and washing machine will last longer and work more efficiently with soft water.
  • Cleaner Clothes: Clothes and towels will last longer and be cleaner when washed in softer water.
  • Healthy Skin and Hair:  Just as hard water can leave soap scum on the bathtub or sink, it can leave residue on skin and hair. Soft water makes soap and shampoo much easier to lather and rinse and leaves skin and hair more hydrated.
  • Fewer Clogs: Scale buildup from hard water can promote clogs in the drainage system. Clean pipes mean better flow and water pressure with fewer clogs.
  • Hotter Water: When a water heater is covered with scale, it cannot do its job as efficiently. Even tankless water heaters can be affected by it.
